You have inspired me to plant lettuce. I’m gonna do a succession planting of mixed greens in a raised bed (so I can protect it from marauders…got lots of those). I’ll start planting mid August and every 2 weeks until I run out of space. I’m thinking I’ll need to shade them until things cool down some. Do you have any suggestions for me, as I am a first-time lettuce grower…

The lettuce was no problem at all for me to grow. For my wife and I, we could have done with half as many plants as I had but it was great to be able to share it.

I grew 4 rows of 6 plants, each of the 4 rows were a different kind of lettuce. I would think that if you have limited space it would be good to share the purchase with someone, when I purchased the plants came 6 in a tray. Having several types of lettuce makes for a nice salad variety.

Purchasing seedlings is recommended in order to get the most from the season. Full sun was the recommendation and my experience was that the plants that I had that received the most shade did not produce as well, so give them the sun, protect them from the critters and ensure that they are well watered. Use of mulch will help retain water in your soil.
