All the tomatoes are full grown and one has actually turned to ash from being in the full sun. Of the 6 remaining, two I have just given over to the birds, tired of the fight. The other four are producing, one really well, although splitting and cracking is an issue. Must say, though, that […]
With a title like this you can be sure there is no tomato in this story! My fall garden is actually a success story about my carryovers from the summer. I have been and continue to be happy with nearly all of my peppers, cucumbers, green beans and okra (which i like growing more than […]
And I thought the mouse was bad. This is the damage one rabbit did overnight. It appears that only one of these plants has a chance to actually live through this distruction. The others have been eaten almost completely. I put the planter up on bricks, but it was too late. Wylie Wabbit outsmarted me. […]
Tending the garden is more than just weeding, pruning, fertilizing, watering and harvesting. If this were all there was to it we organic gardeners could spend lots of time doing whatever else that keeps us from gardening, and when we would return to the garden there would be no unpleasant surprises. Somehow the use of […]

It is certainly eye-catching, but I can’t help thinking that I really don’t want to fall in love with it. I do appreciate God’s creations, but there are some that I just would like to do without. This worm or actually caterpillar, was found on one of my tomato plants today, so I took a […]
Mr Toad Visits The Garden…sounds like a children’s story, doesn’t it? Normally, I would love to have a toad in my garden. They eat all kinds of pests and are a bonus for sure, but this bad boy is a 2 pound Colorado River Toad. Ick! Ick! Ick! They emit a poison from their backs […]
Well I thought it was a wasp. Now I wish it were a wasp! In fact I think that I would rather it had been a wasp, and that it stung me and left me alone to suffer the pain of the sting. I grabbed my camera, and of course I was thinking that it […]
Red hybrid earthworms. Each one ingests its weight in organic matter every 24 hours, and excretes highly nutritious fertilizer called castings. These castings are the most perfect plant food known to man and contain 5 times the available nitrogen, 7 times the available phosphorus, 7 times the exchangable magnesium, 11 times the available potash and […]
I’ve got cucumbers! These are my first and are good looking and tasty! I planted along the fence and they have climbed well with very little help from me and are producing well. Nothing special and easy to grow and so far no critter issues of any kind. I should have plenty to share.
This is another critter who visits our house. Tonight he is looking for food, and I’m really grateful for our strong fence. This javelina would reek havoc on every plant he could reach, and wouldn’t act friendly toward us at all if the fence was not there. You cannot imagine how nasty he and his […]
